Some methodological considerations on the design of VLSI components are given, and the concrete design experience of an LAPD protocol controller for ISDN (integrated services digital network) networks is presented. Major emphasis is given to those advanced design techniques and methodologies, such as silicon compilation, that allow a fast and efficient design flow
