Abstract
In this paper a cross-layer adaptation mechanism for real-time broadband multimedia over IEEE 802.16e networks is presented. The proposed mechanism coordinates adaptations of the modulation order, transmission power and media encoding rate utilizing information provided by the Physical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers. Simulations show that the use of the proposed mechanism results in increased system capacity, reduced packet loss rates and improved power consumption even in situations of high congestion and users´ mobility.
