Abstract :
The mobile multimedia market is booming due to wireless transmission core migration from 2.5G to 3G technology. In spite of dramatic bandwidth increase, the unreliable nature of the mobile networks challenges the integrity of the data transmission. We propose some untraditional methods of error control to prove the hypothesis "If the channel is characterized by high packet loss rate, the optimum quality of multimedia transmission could be achieved by assigning redundancy bits for error control to source coding domain rather than to the channel coding domain." In the proposed method, the video data is virtually repeated and interleaved. The method is based on the principle of motion vector smoothing, where the motion vectors are processed on the basis of data sharing principles and error propagation effects are neutralized by modified temporal prediction. The proposed methods show good PSNR improvement and subjective quality improvement in comparison with traditional error control coding (convolutional and turbo codes).
