Abstract :
In this paper, in order to develop economical ballast for low wattage metal halide (MH) lamps without an external ignitor, a half-bridge type low-frequency square-wave digital electronic ballast is proposed. A cheap 8-bit microcontroller is employed to improve the starting performance and operate the MH lamp without acoustic resonance in steady state. Adaptive ignition strategy helps the proposed system to overcome impact of the resonant parameters tolerance. The adoption of third harmonic LC resonance attenuates the inherent defect of digital control caused by the discreteness and improves the refinement of igniting voltage greatly. A prototype of the digital electronic ballast for 70W metal halide lamp has been built, and the experimental result proved its validity.
