Abstract
Design of power system protection depends on the configuration of the system, the specifications the system must meet and the constraints that must be satisfied. This paper presents a novel approach in the development of an intelligent system in the protection area of the power system. The architecture of the system is generic and is based on a multi agent paradigm in an object oriented environment and utilises a multi knowledge representation scheme in a case based framework. A case represents a protection design scheme for a particular component of a power system. In this paper, busbar and line protection is considered under typical constraints and specifications. Agents can be regarded as intelligent entities which specialise in specific components of the power system and are responsible for generating partial solutions. The final solution to the design of a protection system is obtained by coordinating the partial solutions
