Abstract
Scalable coding schemes for HDTV are being considered in order to provide for compatibility with lower resolution scanning formats and for graceful degradation of the picture quality in the presence of transmission errors. This paper describes some of the schemes considered within the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different schemes which may be classified as frequency scalable, spatial scalable and SNR scalable. The selection of scalable schemes for inclusion in the MPEG standard is described
