Abstract :
The Scandinavian R&D project HD-Divine (Digital Video Narrow-band Emission) at the International Broadcasting Convention 1992 demonstrated a system for digital terrestrial HDTV for the first time in Europe. The direction for new systems has since changed completely in favour of (completely) digital systems. An improved and extended version of the HDTV codec is able to handle four standard definition TV signals as an alternative to one HDTV signal. Various service objectives are discussed, and hierarchical and reconfigurable technical solutions compared. Support for the European DVB project in search of a common standard is outlined
