Abstract :
The following paper deals with the microstep operation of permanent magnet stepper motors driven in constant current mode. It describes the control and positioning characteristics of motors with different numbers of phases, 2/4, 3 and 5. Motors with higher number of phases show smaller positioning deviations. However in general the positioning errors are an order of magnitude larger than the theoretical step resolution. This fact alone makes the use of microstepping of questionable benefit in terms of simple increases in step resolution
