Abstract
This paper discusses a decision support system for utility protection engineers, offering them the advantages of intelligent alarm processing, fault diagnosis and validation of protection operation. Knowledge based systems perform the alarm processing and fault diagnosis functions, whereas model based diagnosis is employed for the validation of protection operation. The integration of both paradigms is demonstrated through a case study
