Preface [to 2012 Third International Conference on Emerging Security Technologies]

These proceedings include the papers presented at the Third International Conference on Emerging Security Technologies (EST 2012), held at the Hotel Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade, Lisbon, Portugal on 5-7 September 2012. The motivation behind the EST 2012 conference is to to develop an active forum dedicated to the exchange and discussion of new ideas and concepts in emerging technologies that span applications from personal biometrics to national security. Papers presented during the conference examined many complex issues in strategically important areas such as surveillance, threat detection, controlled access, and secure communication. Contributions can be grouped into the following primary fields: Biometrics, Vision, Hardware Security, Autonomous Systems, and Bio??Security. These topics were also covered by the keynote speakers.
