Abstract :
The paper reviews the state of the art on application knowledge acquisition from existing software systems and defines the role of business rules. It then goes on to present a method for identifying and extracting business rules by means of data output identification and program stripping. This method has been implemented in a reverse engineering tool SOFT-REDOC for COBOL programs. The results are intended to aid the business analyst in comprehending legacy programs
