Abstract :
Modern telecommunication networks-"next generation networks" bring new challenges to telecommunication equipment. One of the challenges is the quantity of different, yet functionally similar communication protocols that can be used. In this environment there is no single, dedicated physical line that connects terminal equipment to the central office. Users can now easily connect to different service providers. This paper deals with some of the problems that arise in such an environment and presents a case study for a H.323 based solution. A real embedded system-IP phone is used as an example for illustrating architectural decisions that enable adaptation of an embedded system to changes in its environment.
