  • Abstract
Blackouts of power systems are mainly caused by cascading failures, and the major reasons for cascading failures of the power grid are multiple failures due to extreme weather, hidden failures of protection and weaknesses in network topology. Based on the analysis and summarization of the historical accidents, this paper studies the risks of cascading failures in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) from multiple perspectives. By improving the preventive control measures, increasing the ability for failure analysis of complex incidents, developing emergency control measures and building up practical technical tools to handle cascading failures, CSG has triumphantly dealt with several complex incidents and effectively controlled the risks of cascading failures.
