  • Abstract
    The detoxification of chrome shaving was firstly carried out to extract chromium from chrome shaving and release more active sites, and then this detanned chrome shaving utilized as an adsorbent for removal of chromium (III) from aqueous solutions was evaluated. Chrome shaving and detanned chrome shaving were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses prior to adsorption test. Batch experiments were conducted to acquire the optimal treatment parameters. Datas show that adsorption capacity of detanned chrome shaving increases with rise of pH2-6 and the maximum adsorption capacity is 39.4 mg chromium (III) per 1 g detanned chrome shaving. The removal of chromium (III) by the detanned chrome shaving from aqueous solution is a quasi-instantaneous process and attains equilibrium after 30 minutes. After 6 recycling times, the DCS can still be used as an adsorbent to remove Cr (III) in effect. All demonstrate the better potential for using detanned chrome shaving as a low-cost alternative to the traditionally used adsorbent materials.
