Abstract
A two-cell BA5372 Li/MnO2 battery which replaces the environmentally undesirable HgO/Zn BA 1372 battery has been developed and is in production. In addition, a lithium manganese dioxide cell (CR-1/2AA) is being manufactured for use in a night vision goggle system (NVGS) for the US Navy. Performance and safety characteristics of these units are described. A spiral wound 5.5-Ah Li/MnO2 C-cell has been developed for electronic applications. The performance of this cell as a function of rate and temperature is dependent on both design parameters and electrolyte composition. Performance and safety test results are described in detail and potential applications such as use in emergency positioning indicating radio beacons are discussed
