  • Abstract
A project is underway to develop a sealed nickel-cadmium battery with increased performance and an extended life for aircraft applications. The authors describe the approach and present the initial findings. The scope of this project is very broad and includes studies, investigations, and experiments involving all areas of battery performance, components, and manufacturing processes including: substrate; impregnation; separators; electrolyte; case design; charge characteristics; and long-term failure mechanisms. Because of the number of variables involved and their complex realization, experiments are being carefully designed and statistical methods are used to analyze the data
