Abstract :
To build 10 Ahr size and larger lithium-copper-chloride (CuCl2) rechargeable cells, a rectangular cell geometry was selected with CuCl2 electrodes ≃2.7 nm thick. The thicker than usual CuCl2 electrodes were selected to reduce the short-circuit current, increase the specific energy, and improve the mechanical abuse tolerance of the larger cells. At the present time 11 deep discharge cycles at a depth of 0.85 e-/CuCl2, i.e., 52 mAh/cm2, have been obtained at 0.75 mA/cm2 with a small Li/CuCl2 cell with a 2.7 nm-thick 2.0 cm×3.0 cm CuCl2 electrode
