Abstract
An air-cooled phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) is being developed. The portable power unit, which has an output power of several hundred watts, is discussed. The cell performance changes depending on the operating temperature. Although the performance is reduced by lowering the operation temperature, the cell voltage of about 670 mV is obtained even at a low temperature of 100°C, by using pure hydrogen as a fuel. The electrolyte and cell service life are considered. For the portable power unit with a PAFC operator at a low temperature, the basic characteristics were obtained in the operation test of a 250 W brass board model. The operation data, consisting of voltage, current, temperature, pressure, etc., of the 250 W portable power unit are shown
