Abstract :
This paper shows results of aging tests having the purpose to investigate the effect of power electronics supply waveforms on the reliability of low-voltage wire-wound asynchronous motors. Partial discharge phenomena were incepted in low power motors by connecting them to a commercial PWM inverter through a cable long enough to generate overshoot in the supply voltage. Partial discharge activity was monitored online and offline at pre-selected times. The results show that partial discharge activity is able to bring motors to breakdown in very short time and that partial discharge magnitude and repetition rate can be used as aging markers to infer insulation condition.
