Abstract :
Hybrid permanent magnet (HPM) generator systems are an interesting concept for consideration in series hybrid-electric vehicle power-trains, particularly for range-extender functions. This paper presents a study into the operational characteristic of a HPM generator when delivering fixed power at fixed speed into a dynamic DC voltage source typical of a hybrid-EV power-train subject to urban driving regimes. Consideration is made of the most appropriate excitation scheme in terms of buck, boost or other functionality. Simulated performance characteristics are validated via test data from a prototype machine and loading system.
