Abstract :
Recent advances in photonic integration technology have allowed high-performance optical signal processing modules based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) to be realised. I describe the novel hybrid integration platform that allows different active and passive optical components to be combined with low optical losses via a low-cost passive assembly approach. A range of advanced SOA-based optical processing modules are illustrated and their performance is shown in applications from high-speed optical regeneration to optical logic.
