Abstract
A rough outline of the essential features and problems of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) are presented. The fact that many ATM components require fast microelectronics is discussed. Output buffered and crosspoint buffered switches are investigated to demonstrate that critical ATM circuits can be realized using a good ASIC technology
