Abstract
This paper discusses the potential role of satellites in extending the range of law enforcement field communications and remote tracking of moving transmitters. The results of an evaluation of the technical performance of a representative extended range satellite -based system by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Naturalization Service using a test vehicle equipped with VHF satellite communications and tracking equipments are presented. The test vehicle traveled across the United States during May-June 1976. Current DEA experiments with a low-orbiting satellite are also described.
