Abstract :
Shaped homogenous dielectric lenses were proposed and thoroughly investigated as antenna elements for mobile broadband communications systems at millimeter-waves. Now that the shaped-beam concept was shown to be very effective for this application, it is desirable to study alternative lens configurations that favor its integration with planar circuit technology. This paper proposes two cylindrical lens configurations using a non-uniform anisotropic material, that produce highly shaped beams for millimeter-wave mobile applications like sec/sup 2/ and flat-top output patterns. Our design is based on geometric optics (GO) for anisotropic media, being to our best knowledge, the first time in the literature that the effect of the anisotropy of an artificial material is taken in account in the lens design.
