Abstract :
This paper presents the potential of ultra-high definition (UD), which has 16 times the definition of high definition (HD), cable television broadcasting. We assume that future audio and video codec technology, viz. H.265, provides approximately a 25% bit rate savings for equivalent quality over MPEG-2. About 80 Mbps is required per UD service, but this exceeds the Shannon capacity for a 6 MHz channel. Hence, we study the potential of UD transmission via two TV channels, to achieve both a satisfactory bit rate and threshold of visibility.
