Abstract :
The image understanding environments do not fully address the needs of researchers working in the areas of document and handwriting analysis and understanding. Deficiencies of these environments include: platform dependence; limitations in the way in which users can interact with or extend the environment; and lack of support for accessing evaluation databases. The handwriting understanding environment (HUE) addresses these deficiencies by including a library of domain-specific handwriting and document analysis components within a small, efficient, and easily accessible Tcl Tk script-based software framework. This paper reviews the current state of HUE, compares the prototype HUE against other image understanding environments, and includes some proposals for HUE´s future development
