Abstract
Under given energy constraints of low-cost sensor devices the power consumption is one of the key issues in wireless sensor networks. Nodes in the network can be affected with interference of neighbor nodes which causes collisions and congestions. As a result, it increases power consumption and reduces network lifetime. To cope with this problem a new energy-efficient topology control algorithm is proposed. Based on location information, the proposed algorithm minimizes a set of relay nodes to reduce redundant coverage of the network area and consequently reduces interference. It requires only 1-hop neighborhood information to do so. Since only selected nodes act as relays at the particular time interval, it reduces whole network energy consumption, prolongs operational network lifetime and reduces collisions and congestion thus increasing packet delivery ratio. The simulations show that the proposed algorithm improves energy-efficiency of the sensor network and also improves packet delivery ratio.
