Abstract :
Summary form only given. Faraday cups have been used to measure ion currents at distances ranging from a few centimeters to a few tens of centimeters upstream of the nominal region of injection of opening switch plasmas on ACE 4 and DMI. The purpose of this paper is to explain the magnitude and time dependence of these currents in terms of the initial plasma conditions and physical mechanisms leading to the observed behavior.
