Microsoft released the Windows NT operating system in mid-1993 with support for three processor architectures: Digital Equipment Corporation´s Alpha AXP, Intel´s x86, and MIPS´ R4xxx. Digital Equipment Corporation ported Windows NT to the Alpha AXP architecture in conjunction with Microsoft. This paper discusses the goals and history of the port, and examines the key technical issues involved in porting Windows NT to another processor architecture.<>
