Title :
Low power hardware for a high performance PDA
Author_Institution :
Apple Comput. Inc., Cupertino, CA, USA
Abstract :
The first product in the Apple Newton family of personal digital assistants (PDAs) operates under severe constraints in the areas of performance, cost, heat dissipation, power consumption, scalability, size and weight. This paper gives an overview of the Newton MessagePad system hardware, and focuses on the techniques and tradeoffs used to overcome these constraints. In particular, synergetic migration of functions from hardware to software and vice-versa is discussed.<>
