Abstract
This paper represents the experiences of one electricity distribution network operator with the building of a new tramway project, Midland Metro. Line 1 of Midland Metro was completed and opened for passenger service in 1999. It comprises a single, end to end, route of 13 miles between the centres of Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Most of this is along the route of an old conventional railway, closed in about 1970. The last 2 miles into Wolverhampton runs along a road, sharing the route with ordinary traffic. The author discusses the problem of stray current corrosion with particular reference to the street running section. The author discusses where the stray current problem arises for the utility and how Midlands Electricity overcame the problem for the Midland Metro
