Abstract :
Some of the dominant corporations in the IT industry provide training and certification schemes. These vocational qualifications have become widely accepted and can be used to gain credit towards an academic award. Higher education institutions may also provide opportunities for students to gain a vocational qualification alongside their academic award. This paper explores the characteristics of these vocational qualifications and propose ways in which these schemes may be used to complement or add value to a traditional academic award
