Abstract :
In this paper a systematic procedure in order to apply IEC/EN 62305-2:2012 2nd edition to nuclear and radiological environments is proposed and analyzed, with reference to additional loss due to dispersal of radioactivity. When lightning damage to a structure involves the surrounding environment, additional loss should be taken into account to evaluate the total loss. The mean percentage of persons injured by physical damage outside the structure is obtained through a step by step procedure. The procedure is based on the use of standard technical documents about potential exposures, presented by undertaking during the authorization process, coupled with a simplified model of the radioactive plume generated as a consequence of fire triggered by the lightning. The lightning protection designer will therefore be able to reliably determine the additional loss due to the atmospheric release of radioactivity performing the detailed investigation proposed in this paper.
