Abstract :
Lightning current parameters, type and location of lightning fault are key factors for making a lightning risk assessment of transmission line scientifically. An assessment method is proposed on the basis of differentiated lightning protection ideology using distributed traveling wave monitoring, which treats lightning risk with more details and is employed in an actual 500kV transmission line. It is suggested that back striking risk is much higher than shield failure. Besides, the assessment result also provides guidance for lightning protection alteration in adopting measures.
