Abstract
The goal of this work is to investigate highly asymmetric couplers as a potential component for monolithic integration. Since most coupled mode formulations available do not attend to requirements such as high refractive index steps, strong coupling, and high propagation losses, a new orthogonal coupled mode approach based on the integral form of the Lorentz reciprocity theorem is formulated. The results obtained with this new approach include the following loss mechanisms: radiation modes, leaky modes, and grating radiation
