Abstract :
In this paper attention is mainly focused on the assessment of some functions designed for the upper levels of the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) to ensure the overall degree of synchronisation among the different traffic components of a multimedia service. Techniques for the joined management of the components are enhanced by coupling them with a sliding window mechanism which performs the measurement of the degree of synchronisation on the air interface. It also controls, by means of a feedback mechanism, that this synchronisation is held for the entire duration of the call. Good performance can be achieved, especially under high total traffic load. This is extensively documented by curves and tables showing the performance obtainable under different conditions of offered channel load, traffic compositions and statistical distributions
