Abstract :
The backflash outage rate (BFOR) of typical 220/110 kV quadruple-circuit transmission lines due to direct negative lightning strokes in Guangdong power grid and the effects of common lightning protection measures are analyzed based on ATP-EMTP and the method recommended by IEEE and Chinese Standards. The results show the current front time and peak current distribution of the first and subsequent stroke have great influence on the BFOR. The tower height is more sensitive to the BFOR due to subsequent stroke. The single and double circuit BFOR significantly reduced with the reduction of tower foot resistance, and the reduction of tower foot resistance has a saturation effect for BFOR due to subsequent stroke when the resistance is below 10 Ω. The protection measures of unbalanced insulation and increased insulation are effective for BFOR due to first and subsequent stroke.
