Abstract :
A variable-bit-rate voice coding suitable for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is described. The method uses an ADPCM coder that can operate at 2, 3, 4, or 5 b/sample, depending on parameters such as incoming signal power and prediction gain. It aims at processing simplicity and high quality when applied to ATM cell assembly/disassembly equipment. Experiments with several voice samples show that average rates are one third to one half of 64 kb/s with quality almost equivalent to PCM coding
