  • Abstract
The IS-136 North American digital cellular standard defines a digital control channel protocol that encompasses residential base stations, which work with digital cellular handsets to provide enhanced cordless functionality. Such a residential base station is referred to as a personal base station (PBS). With careful design, these IS-136 personal base stations can operate autonomously, measuring their respective RF environments and adaptively selecting their own operating frequencies. This paper describes key system design aspects of the autonomous PBS and its adaptive channel selection algorithms
