Abstract :
This document presents an analytical approach to calculate the interception probability and the number of strikes into simple structures, to be expected as a result of a given ground flash density. The methodology is based on the approach of a dynamic electro-geometrical model (DEGM) and complies with the parameters and requirements expressed in the standard IEC 62305. Although there are previous simulation results from discretized standardized structures, it is the authors´ aim to present a very accurate and precise solution, which has no dependency on discretization or simplification. The analytic results can be used as a benchmark to evaluate results from computer based simulations. In this elaboration the striking probability of three different arrangements are investigated. A single lightning rod with different heights is achieved and compared to published measurements in Czechoslovakia from 1959 to 1985. Furthermore a standardized structure and a hemisphere are analyzed in order to evaluate computer simulation methodologies. Finally a new simulation method is introduced and a complex structure is investigated.
