Abstract :
RTV (room-temperature vulcanizing) silicon rubber is investigated with various levels of alumina trihydrate (ATH) filler. The temperature distribution in the coating during dry band arcing is theoretically determined. The effect of the addition of ATH filler is discussed. It is shown that dry band arcing produces high temperatures (hot spots) which dissociate chemical bonds at the surface. It is suggested that during dry band arcing, the heat energy at the surface penetrates into the bulk of the coating, thereby breaking side groups and the main chain of the polydimethyl silicone molecule
