Abstract :
The increasing economic competition in the would has demanded that companies rationalize and optimize the use of their resources. Jointly with this fact, the development of new computational and telecommunication facilities has promoted the unprecedented evolution of application of, and increasing necessity of, communication services. Both facts have caused remarkable changes in traffic characteristics, mainly in the corporate environment which has not been fully studied or understood. Better understanding of traffic characteristics will help companies to design or plan their own communication networks achieving the best use of the network resources. The goal of this paper is to present a data traffic characterization method for data networks (LAN, VSAT and Internet), including a new ATM network, in a large company, facilitating design and implementation
