Abstract :
Electric discharges in small air gaps (10-300 μm) were investigated by measuring the charge transferred to a dielectric foil which filled part of the air gap and was subjected to an impulsive high voltage. The Teflon FEP samples were charged (thus forming electrets) if the peak impulse voltage exceeded a threshold value. Measurements were performed in order to investigate the importance of the metallic electrode and the voltage impulse duration. Also discussed are the mechanisms for triggering the discharge in the air gap and the processes for charge transfer to the dielectric
