Abstract
An IN (intelligent network) evolution framework is established that is based on the network architecture and the service/network resource control relationships inherent in INs. By examining the evolutionary discontinuities related to these elements, three discrete stages in IN evolution are identified and described. The value in evolving from stage to stage is outlined, and some currently available IN specifications are related to these stages
