Abstract :
The uninterruptible power supply (UPS), employing a flywheel for energy storage, and providing line frequency output, is an economical device that can bridge the gap caused by voltage sags and temporary voltage loss. This single conversion UPS has a high energy storage capacity with a small footprint, and requires no toxic chemicals. It has been successfully applied and demonstrated at a carpet manufacturing plant in Charlotte, North Carolina, by the local electric utility. This paper details the design, installation, testing, field performance, and economics of the UPS that supports an entire industrial process line, which extrudes the material used for carpet backing
