Abstract :
The paper is aimed at developing a framework to address the problem of choosing optimum locations for placement of piezoelectric elements used in active control of structural vibrations. This is done by introducing notions of modal and spatial controllabilities for piezoelectric laminates. It is argued that the real problem is not whether the system remains controllable by changing the location of piezoelectric patch. It is rather, how much the controllability of the system is changed as the piezoelectric actuator is moved along the structure
