Digital data transmission over land mobile voice channels field measurements

Recent advances in Land Mobile system development has provided increasing evidence that digital transmission will constitute an important part of Land Mobile communication traffic. The Department of Communications of Canada has initiated studies for the development of standards applicable to digital mobile radio systems. Part of the studies require field measurements for the evaluation of digital transmission over land mobile channels in the VHF and UHF bands. These measurements are conducted under contract from the Department of Communications Canada with Carleton University. This paper describes the experimental set up, the digital modulation techniques and the measurement procedure used for the field measurements. Preliminary results and conclusions are also presented.
