Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the theoretical foundations of the genetic algorithm. It aims to provide those interested in applying GAs to real-world problems with a feel for the techniques that can be employed to analyze and control genetic-based optimizers and control systems. In addition to a review of schema, Walsh-function and statistical mechanics-based methods the paper introduces a model of selection based on statistics of the population fitness distribution
