Abstract :
The authors suggest means of supporting CPN (customer premises network) management in the functions of network configuration, fault location and notification, and performance monitoring by taking advantage of the SONET (synchronous optical network) overhead capabilities. These capabilities basically translate to the communication of management information (as opposed to user data) among CPN terminals using a bit-oriented protocol. The authors first establish baseline models and assumptions in terms of B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) reference configurations and network topologies for the CPN. An estimation of the information bandwidth required to carry such physical layer management information is presented, and the present proposals are related to the OSI (open systems interconnection) management model
