Abstract
The electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment, made of about 80000 lead tungstate crystals, is at the beginning of its construction phase. In the following, general motivations that brought this choice, the main technical challenges encountered and key points to achieve the extreme precision foreseen in energy measurements will be discussed.
